Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible for the Young 5s Kindergarten Program?

Any child who is 5 years old before December 1.  Children who turn 5 between September 2 and December 1 must submit an Age Waiver request form.  Children born after December 1 are not eligible as the state requires students to be “kindergarten age eligible.”

What is the purpose of the Young 5s Kindergarten Program?

Our Young 5s Kindergarten Program recognizes that not all children are ready for a traditional kindergarten classroom.  The Young 5s Kindergarten Program provides a “gift of time” for those students who may not have reached some developmental milestones - socially, emotionally and academically.   Our program will help them build confidence and self-esteem while laying a strong academic foundation for future success in their school years.

How are students selected for the Young 5s Kindergarten Program?

Our Young 5s Kindergarten Program is limited to 1 classroom of students.  Therefore, a lottery system will be used to determine placement.  In order to be included in the lottery, parents need to indicate an interest in their child's enrollment in this program while completing the online registration process.

Priority is given to students having birthdays between September 2 and December 1.   If space is available then a lottery system will be used for those students with birthdays between June 1 and September 1.

How does the Young 5s Kindergarten Program differ from kindergarten?

The Young 5s Kindergarten Program is not intended to replace Kindergarten.  It’s an extra year for students to develop at their own pace while still having the experience of school.  The goal for the children in the Young 5s program is to enter kindergarten confidently with the necessary foundational pre-kindergarten skills.

What is the Young 5s Kindergarten Program schedule and format?

A full-day program that meets 5 days per week.  This will follow the K-12 school calendar.

Where will the Young 5s Kindergarten Program classroom be located?

Gateway Elementary.  The Young 5s Kindergarten Program is open to any student in our district who meet the eligibility above.

Will transportation be available for students in the Young 5s Kindergarten Program?

Yes.  Bus transportation is available for students.  Those students who reside in the Eureka and Riley elementary boundaries will ride the bus with their middle school and high school counterparts.

What is the cost for my child to be in the Young 5s Kindergarten Program?

There is NO COST to our families as this program is eligible for the state foundation grant for school funding.

Who is teaching the Young 5s Kindergarten Program?

The Young 5 Kindergarten Program classroom will be taught by a certified teacher eligible to teach kindergarten.
